The manufacture of stained glass has changed little over
the centuries. It requires a mix of artistic skills along
with the technical ability of craft making.
After creating the design the following steps are taken:
-Our design is drawn full scale. This drawing is known as
the cartoon.
-We select every segment of coloured glass.
-Using natural daylight, the glass is cut carefully to the
shapes of the cartoon.
-Glass segments can be hand painted, acid etched or sand
blasted.
-All the glass segments are leaded together and soldered
at each joint.
-Lead light cement is brushed between the glass and lead,
sometimes known as smudging. The panel is now weather-tight
and rigid.
-We add copper ties and saddle bars for strength.
-The finished stained glass panel is now installed.
From design through to the finished piece, each step is
done by hand
with meticulous attention to quality and detail. |
