Marischal College

Name of Building: Marischal College, Aberdeen

Location:  Broad St, Aberdeen AB10 1AB

Listing: Category A

Project: This building is a large and impressive predominantly Tudor-Gothic granite collegiate complex. It encompasses stained glass windows located within the Senate Room and Ante Room, and leaded glass located within the Tower and there are also 8 Turret windows located within the Quadrangle. The leaded glass windows throughout the building are in various degrees of deterioration.

Conservation Approach: The purpose of this project was to review all windows, and to consider the best method of conservation and carry out the work to a high standard within the time scale and budget requirements.

The diamond quarries windows have been reglazed using ‘Restauro’ distorted clear sheet and 5/16th flat profile lead for the main quarry glazing interspersed with 5/8th flat profile to the tracery detailing copying what was determined to be the oldest of the remaining panels.

This project was carried out in partnership with Iona Art Glass who was in charge of the protective glazing and conservation of the stained glass windows. All conservation procedure has been done following the CVMA guidelines.
