Contemporary

Rainbow Glass Studio can discuss a creative way to incorporate a new contemporary stained-glass window within a building. This window would be designed to suit your specific requirements and its chosen surroundings."

A word from Moira Malcolm conservator and stained glass artist

Since opening Rainbow Glass studio LTD in 2001, I now enjoy having the freedom to create my own ideas and designs in stained glass and have installed 45 commissions throughout Scotland. I feel that the combination of glass and light with addition of tone from glass painting and acid etching has unlimited potential to create unique and uplifting art. This begins with an original and creative design. It is important for me to listen to the client and show my portfolio. We discuss ideas with the client and build a trustful relationship in order to achieve a successful project. During the creation process, I review the location and architecture of the building, interior and quality of light within its chosen surroundings. Taking into consideration all of this information, I create a unique watercolour design, drawn to scale. This is then presented to the client for approval. Once the design has been approved, the stained glass is carefully hand crafted then installed. A commission is a very personal experience and communication throughout the project allows the client to follow the development of the work. I welcome studio visits and the client can arrange to view the work in-progress. Depending on the design, it normally takes between 9-12 months to complete a stained-glass commission from design through to approval, manufacture and finally installation.

Products

I am fully involved in all aspects of the creation of my windows. I choose only to use high-quality hand-blown glass from Germany France and England. I draw the design up full size and then hand pick each segment of glass to be cut from a certain part of the sheet. This glass is then attached to our “mock up” glass easel. The colours of this glass can be rich and sumptuous or soft, subtle and streaky but really come into their own when sun light streams through. I can then paint, etch and apply any detail to the glass to natural light, thus allowing me to view the colours as closely as possible to how they will be viewed when the window is installed in its final home.  When I am fully happy with all glass and applied detail, the glass is detached from the easel and lead glazed.

Costs

The cost of a stained-glass panel is based on 4 main factors:

  • The complexity of the design.
  • The amount of time taken to create the panel.
  • The cost of the materials
  • The size of the panel
