NATURE

Throughout all off the designs run the theme of nature a major part of Scouting. All of nature’s elements are included.

I have focused on camping as the main theme as this is an activity that scouting was associated with from the beginning and will still be a main activity in years to come. I understand that the boys are involved in more modern activities such as snowboarding, rafting, and etc. but these activates may not be relevant in say 40, 50 or 100 years. The design of the window has to stand the test of time.

It is important that all these are included as camping was intended to make the boys appreciate and respect the living world. I have not included any strong religious symbols but I feel that the focus on nature is enough to represent God. Getting close to nature is in fact the same as getting close to God and appreciating his world. “Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy.” Robert Baden-Powell.

In all of the designs I wanted to show how the scouts have a positive effect in the development of a child’s path into adulthood.

ENERGY and MOVEMENT

I wanted all of the designs to have lots of energy and movement. This represents the scouts’ youth and enthusiasm for life.

SEEDS & LEAVES

They represent growth and nurture of growth. This is present in all of the designs. The seeds fall from the trees along with the leaves that help fertilise the seeds. This shows ongoing development and symbolises that scouting helps to set young people on the correct path into life.

BOOT PRINTS, CAMPFIRE and TENTS

Represent the scout’s presence.

YELLOW AND THE SUN

this represents a number of important factors important for a child’s development into adult life. Firstly, the sun is necessary for warmth and growth. It also symbolises light and guidance “I am the light of the world, come follow me and you will never walk in darkness.”

COMPASS

this also represents guidance. By teaching the boys this tool stops them from becoming lost and how to find their way home. This carries through to life.

PAWPRINTS

this represents the animal life and also is the symbol for the cubs.

TWO FLAGS

these are of the union jack and also the scouts flag. The St Andrews cross is etched into the sky.

BORDER

I will take words from the Scout Law and etch them into the surrounding border. This will be done in the same style as the year of the Child Window situated to the right of this new stained glass window.
